Crystal Dynamics Will Continue to Co-Develop Perfect Dark With The Initiative Following Embracer Deal

Following the Square Enix and Embracer deal, Crystal Dynamics will continue to co-develop Microsoft's Perfect Dark reboot with The Initiative.

The Initiative took to Twitter to confirm the continued partnership alongside sharing the team has made "great progress" building the next-gen take on Perfect Dark.

"We’re excited to see Crystal Dynamics take these next steps with their studio," The Initiative wrote. "Our teams have made great progress in building Perfect Dark together as co-development partners, and we will be continuing this work with them in their next chapter."

The Perfect Dark reboot was first announced at The Game Awards 2020 as a first-person shooter with an "eco sci-fi" theme. The game, which would be the first new entry in the franchise since 2005's Perfect Dark Zero, is "aiming to deliver a secret agent thriller set in a near-future world."

In September 2021, The Initiative announced it was partnering with Tomb Raider's Crystal Dynamics to develop Perfect Dark, saying the two teams "couldn't pass up a chance to work together."

We still have yet to learn more about what exactly the Perfect Dark game will be, but a report from earlier in 2022 suggested that The Initiative suffered significant staff departures over the past year. Two of the reasons cited for staff leaving are "a lack of creative autonomy and slow development progress."

Embracer Group announced earlier this morning, May 2, that it had entered an agreement with Square Enix to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, Square Enix Montréal, and a "catalogue of IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, Legacy of Kain and more than 50 back-catalogue games from Square Enix Holdings" for $300 million.

According to Square Enix, this transaction will allow it to invest more in the blockchain, AI, and the cloud.

Here's Spider-Man In the Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 Demo

The Matrix Awakens demo created on Unreal Engine 5 may have been created for one pop-culture franchise, but that hasn't stopped modders from adding other favorites like Spider-Man to its world.

As reported by Eurogamer, YouTuber DWR shared footage of a playable Spider-Man demo - which you can see here - set in the Megacity created for The Matrix Awakens demo that was created by using Lewis Fiford's UE4 Spider-Man Project. As one would expect, the demo - which you can download here - allows you to swing around like Spidey and even wall-run on the city's many buildings.

DWR notes that the demo is "a heavy load" and will come with some frame rate drops, but it does give a glimpse of what the future of Spider-Man could look like on UE5.

The Spider-Man demo follows a similar mod from TJATOMICA that stars Superman and allows players to fly through the city as Superman would.

The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience was released in December 2021, and is an impressive showcase that teases the potential of the new engine that is now available.

Hopefully, this glimpse of the future of Spider-Man will help make the wait for Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 a little easier, which is set to arrive on PS5 in 2023.

Signalis: The First Preview

When I first laid eyes on Signalis, I was immediately fascinated by its futuristic sci-fi setting and the enigmatic aura that was brought alongside it. I knew very little about it going into my demo, but after my 30-minute playtime with the opening segment, I walked away with more questions about what lies throughout this mysterious adventure.

Signalis put me in the shoes of a Replika named Elster who wakes up from cryo sleep on a desolated spaceship. As I explored, I quickly found myself encountering foreign lifeforms who have infiltrated the ship, but lacked any apparent intelligence aside from their only known goal – that being killing you. I also learned that the ship’s goal was to find planets that were habitable to eventually migrate to and, for some unknown reason, the ship has crash landed on a snow planet.

I immediately felt enclosed in a claustrophobic space aboard the ship, with each room being small with little room to maneuver. This lack of capacity would have been even more effective if enemies would follow you into other rooms, but for whatever reason, they don’t. If you’re able to escape, they’ll just stay where they were when you entered the next room. Having them continue chasing me throughout the ship would have given me a more sense of urgency and realism to the experience.

I immediately felt enclosed in a claustrophobic space aboard the ship.

As I searched for answers on the ship, I found documents detailing its objective along with other lore that I wasn’t able to connect any dots with, seeing as this was just a very small piece of the full game. There were a few puzzles to solve, though, some of which required experimentation like leveling out electricity rods to power a door or finding the right pad combination to open a containment chamber.

Progressing through, I gained access to several weapons, including a pistol and stun rod. With Signalis being a survival horror game, resources are limited and hard to come by. Even the stun rod has a limited amount of uses. Not only are resources sparse, but so is your inventory. More than once I found myself having one too many items on my person, requiring me to deposit something in a storage box for safekeeping.

Not only are resources sparse, but so is your inventory.

Enemies can be debilitated, but even with a gun it never seemed like they could be permanently neutralized. Once knocked down you can hit them to incapacitate and preserve ammo, but over time they will inevitably get up again. Health is managed similarly to Resident Evil where it is displayed through your vital signs, but you’ll know when you are close to death because of the red aura on the outline of the screen. By using patches or repair spray I was able to recover my health, but if I did end up dying I would simply respawn back to the previous room I was in.

Escaping the ship was just a glimpse of what Signalis has to offer, and based on where my demo ended, there looks to be plenty of surprises once the full game is out later this year. I’m eager to learn more about Signalis’s lore, the mysteries that lie on this unknown ice planet, and how it all falls into place. Hopefully all will be brought to light.

Square Enix Says Embracer Acquisitions Allow It to Invest More in the Blockchain, AI, and the Cloud

Square Enix has shared some of its reasoning behind the decision to sell Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, and Square Enix Montréal to Embracer Group, saying the transaction will allow the company to invest more in the blockchain, AI, and the cloud.

Square Enix revealed the purpose of the transaction in its execution of share transfer agreement with change to subsidiaries document, saying it will assist the company in "adapting to the changes underway in the global business environment by establishing a more efficient allocation of resources, which will enhance corporate value by accelerating growth in the Company’s core businesses in the digital entertainment domain."

"In addition, the Transaction enables the launch of new businesses by moving forward with investments in fields including blockchain, AI, and the cloud," Square Enix said.

This news follow Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda's New Year's Day 2022 letter that was centered on the company's growing focus on NFTs, blockchain games, and the metaverse. Matsuda also reiterated his interest in blockchain games in April 2022.

The transaction, which will give Embracer Group access to such IP as Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Legacy of Kain, Thief, and more, will "also provide an opportunity to better align our overseas publishing function
with our organization in Tokyo."

Moving forward, Square Enix's "development function will comprise its studios in Japan, Square Enix External Studios, and Square Enix Collective. The company's overseas studios will continue to publish franchises such as Just Cause, Outriders, and Life Is Strange."

The Embracer Group and Square Enix deal is expected to close during Q2 of Embracer's financial year 2022/2023. The two companies also agreed on a purchase price of $300 million.

Embracer Group Enters Agreement to Acquire Eidos, Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix Montreal, and More

Embracer Group has entered into an agreement to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, Square Enix Montréal, and a "catalogue of IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, Legacy of Kain and more than 50 back-catalogue games from Square Enix Holdings" for $300 million.

Embracer shared the news in a press release, saying this acquisition includes roughly 1,100 employees across three studios and eight global locations. The deal, if it goes through, is expected to close during Q2 of Embracer's financial year 2022/2023.

”We are thrilled to welcome these studios into the Embracer Group. We recognize the fantastic IP, world class creative talent, and track record of excellence that have been demonstrated time and again over the past decades. It has been a great pleasure meeting the leadership teams and discussing future plans for how they can realize their ambitions and become a great part of Embracer,” says Lars Wingefors, Co-founder and Group CEO, Embracer Group.

”Embracer is the best kept secret in gaming: a massive, decentralized collection of entrepreneurs whom we are thrilled to become a part of today. It is the perfect fit for our ambitions: make high-quality games, with great people, sustainably, and grow our existing franchises to their best versions ever. Embracer allows us to forge new partnerships across all media to maximize our franchises’ potential and live our dreams of making extraordinary entertainment,” says Phil Rogers, Square Enix America and Europe CEO.

Once this deal goes through, Embracer will have more than 14,000 employees, 10,000 game developers, and 124 internal studios. It also confirmed it has more than 230 games in development at those studios, and more than 30 are AAA titles.

This news comes shortly after Crystal Dynamics announced it was developing a brand-new Tomb Raider game on Unreal Engine 5. No further details were given, but the team did say it was planning to "push the envelope of fidelity."

Crystal Dynamics is also the studio behind Marvel's Avengers and it has been helping Microsoft's The Initiative develop the new Perfect Dark game.

Eidos Montréal is the studio behind Thief 4, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and more, and it is "working on a host of AAA projects including both new releases from beloved franchises and original IP."

Square Enix Montréal is responsible for such games as Hitman GO, Tomb Raider GO, and Deus Ex GO, and it will continue to work in the mobile space building games based on AAA IP.

Someone Modded the Fisher-Price Game Controller to Work on PC and Played Elden Ring With It

Rudeism on Twitter has modded the Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Game & Learn Controller to actually work on PC, and they even played Elden Ring with it.

Rudeism shared footage of Elden Ring being played with the Fisher-Price toy, which he effectively turned into an Xbox controller. He also explained a bit about how he modded the controller while leaving many of the toy's original sounds intact.

One of the biggest challenges was the fact that the controller has no right analog stick. To get around this, Rudeism utilized the mode switch on the controller that changes the mode from music to numbers.

When you switch the mode over, it turns the left joystick into a right joystick. It also changes some of the face buttons to do different actions as well. The joystick even pushes in as it would on a normal Xbox controller. There are two bumpers on top - one with a wheel and one that acts as a light switch of sorts - and they account for LB/LT and RB/RT.

This project was inspired by an "off-hand joke" that Wario64 tweeted out on April 15. He shared a link to a discounted Fisher-Price controller and said it was, "perfect for Elden Ring."

Speaking to IGN, Rudeism said that it was a "suuuuper tight fit - I had to get a Stanley knife to trim down the USB port just so I could squeeze it in there." This made for one of Rudeism's cleanest builds, however.

It was also one of his easier builds as he just "piggybacked off of the existing circuit board." Fitting everything in the controller was the toughest part, and they had to "fit a whole new thumbstick & 3D print a mount for it, as well as add new electronics for the shoulder buttons."

Rudeism is no stranger to unique controller creations, as he recently beat Dark Souls 3 with Morse code, and once played Overwatch using a bunch of bananas.
