Microsoft Stopped Announcing Xbox Console Sales Because It Cares More About ‘Content Services'

Microsoft stopped announcing Xbox console sales some time ago, a move most believe was at least in part because they compare poorly to sales of PlayStation consoles and Nintendo Switch. But according to one Xbox executive, that has nothing to do with it.

Speaking at the Wells Fargo 2023 TMT Summit, Xbox chief financial officer Tim Stuart insisted Microsoft decided to quit publishing console sales because console sales alone do not paint the full picture of the health of the Xbox business.

“About six or seven years ago, we stopped giving console volume externally,” he said. “And at first, it was like, 'what are you doing?' You're the Xbox business, you're not giving us consoles, that makes no sense. But it was really the first point of us saying, no, no, it's about content services.

“Our business is PxQ [the product of price and quantity], more customers spending more money. And that's really how I think about our model. So, when we talk about content and services externally, that's our [key performance indicator]. And for that number to go up, you need more gamers and you need more gamers spending money. And we've really focused on that with our internal teams as a — here's how we grow the business, go bring more users in and find ways for them to play.

“And it goes a little bit to — and my last point here is about business model — we call it business model optimisation, but really business model diversity. And if a gamer comes in, they can subscribe to Game Pass, they can buy a game digitally, they can have advertising to fund their gaming that way. And so however they want to monetise, we're trying to find a way for them to spend money with us. And we've seen that as a very, very good accelerant in this content and services landscape.”

Stuart’s comments echo those made by Xbox executives before, but come at a particularly tough time for Xbox console sales. According to recent data for October, Sony’s PlayStation 5 is “comfortably” number one in Europe, with sales up an incredible 143% over October last year. The near seven-year-old Nintendo Switch is second despite a 20% drop in sales year-on-year. But the Xbox Series X and S have seen a whopping 52% drop in sales. Microsoft itself has admitted it has lost the console war.

In contrast to Microsoft’s position, Sony and Nintendo do publish console sales figures. Perhaps there’s no surprise there, given how healthy they are. PS5 has now sold an impressive 46.5m PlayStation 5 units three years after the console launched. The Nintendo Switch has sold an eye-watering 132.46 million units as it nears its seventh birthday.

Microsoft’s argument that console sales alone do not reflect the health of the business is backed up by its efforts to bolster its Game Pass subscription service as well as its push into the PC market and mobile. It has been some time since Microsoft announced Game Pass had 25 million subscribers. Stuart said the number had grown, but failed to offer an updated figure.

“But even things like Game Pass, we last announced 25 million Game Pass subscribers,” Stuart said. “It's obviously grown since then. But Game Pass is this millions and millions of subscribers month in and month out, which for me, I love because it's more of a paid annuity as opposed to that you're betting on those big game launches every quarter or every year, but a Game Pass helps us smooth it as well.”

Clearly, Microsoft is driving toward the mobile game market. Its $69 billion buyout of Activision Blizzard was as much about King’s $20 billion mobile smash hit Candy Crush Saga as it was about getting Call of Duty on Game Pass, something Stuart acknowledged. In fact, Stuart talked about the limited nature of the console business, which he described as a “couple of hundred million” market and “not growing that fast”, and the PC games business, which is “300 million or 400 million”. Mobile, however, is a market in the billions.

“The most gamers in the world play on mobile,” Stuart said. “We think about the console landscape and part of the real evolution of the deal was, hey, look, we've got a fixed console audience with Xbox or relatively fixed, but not growing that fast. You've got a couple of hundred million kind of console addressable market. You've got 300 million or 400 million kind of in that PC gamer market, and then you have billions in the mobile market.”

The question for Microsoft is of course how it carves out a significant slice of the mobile game pie. Its efforts so far have failed to achieve the blockbuster success it’s clearly after. With King’s Candy Crush and Activision’s Call of Duty mobile games on board, overnight Microsoft is a major player here. But what’s next? Halo on mobile?

“Mobile games are hard to make,” Stuart said. “You have to have the DNA, you have to know how to AB test. You have to know how to do performance marketing and how you think about getting installs. And we've tried on our own a few times. We've got a great Minecraft mobile experience on iOS and Android and other things. So, we've got some foothold, but what Activision, Blizzard, King does on mobile is impressive. And what they've done with Candy Crush being one of the biggest ones from King, but also you think about Call of Duty Mobile, that's the most players playing is, frankly, to Call of Duty Mobile. You think about what they've done with Blizzard and Diablo and World of Warcraft Mobile, they just talked about at BlizzCon a few weeks ago and like I said, Candy Crush.

“So, they're taking their IP into the mobile landscape, and they know how to do it, how to build it, how to iterate quickly, and that's just the DNA is gold. And we can then leverage that with our IP and take the learnings into our business and say, okay, how do we go now address these new - frankly, these new billion gamers that we've never had a chance to go reach before.”

For now, thoughts are still very much on the Xbox console business, and Microsoft’s commitment to pump out more exclusives from its huge first-party studios network amid plans to launch mid-gen refreshes of both the Xbox Series X and S at some point in 2024. It’s promised announcements at next week’s The Game Awards. Perhaps fans will get a clearer idea of what’s to come then.

Game of Thrones Cookbook Gets First Official Look From George R.R. Martin

A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin has shared a first look at the incoming official Game of Thrones cookbook, including a recipe for Highgarden Dumplings.

Revealed on his blog, Martin deemed the holiday period a "fitting time" to give Game of Thrones and food fans an early glimpse at the incoming cookbook.

"The cookbook is presented as the in-world manuscript of Maester Alton, a curious, food-obsessed Citadel master who loves the fare of the highborn and small folk alike," Martin said.

"His recipes evoke the world’s regions, history, and stories in a charming and knowledgeable voice. Each section is introduced with stunning woodcut illustrations like this one featured in the opening pages of the book."

Though it doesn't release until May 7, 2024, Martin shared one of several hundred recipes in the cookbook. The Highgarden Dumplings page does not include the recipe itself but, as mentioned, an excerpt written as if by Maester Alton from within Westeros.

"Nowhere in the Seven Kingdoms can boast such rich harvests or such flavourful produce as the Reach," it begins. "Perhaps there is some truth to the legends of Garth Greenhand and his agrarian powers, but more likely the fertility of the lands around Highgarden can be attributed to the more mundane properties of its soil and geography."

This recipe will be joined by hundreds of others in the final cookbook, which are broken down into different categories: 19 in The Pantry, 111 Breads, 47 Breakfast, 139 Mains, 65 Sides, Starters, and Snacks, 173 Desserts and Sweets, 89 Soups and Stews, and 197 Drinks.

Readers can even prepare meals that make thematic sense, as the cookbook also includes a list of dishes organised by region.

Game of Thrones isn't the first major entertainment franchise to get an official cookbook. Fellow fantasy series The Witcher and The Elder Scrolls have both received entries, for example, alongside other video game franchises such as Stardew Valley and Destiny.

Martin, meanwhile, has been chipping away at the latest A Song of Ice and Fire novel The Winds of Winter, though fans grew concerned at his latest update. The author said in November 2023 he'd written around 1,100 pages, the same number he gave in 2022.

Zelda Fan Creates Epic Godzilla Movie Entirely Within Tears of the Kingdom's Building System

In the months since The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom's release, I thought maybe we'd seen it all. From a perpetual flight machine to classic cars to satellite laser cannons, Zelda fans have used TOTK's wildly customizable crafting mechanics to unleash both their creativity and their chaos.

But one fan and film buff, going by @sumoguri2323 on X/Twitter, has created a whole Godzilla film entirely within Tears of the Kingdom, and it's genuinely a sight to behold. You can watch the brief but epic short film below (or click here if the embed isn't working for you).

The thoughtfully crafted and edited video is complete with music and sound effects, and sees Lurelin Village contending with what I'm going to call Zonai Zilla. The iconic kaiju is recreated using Zonai materials and devices and the Ultrahand ability, and is seen marching through the water to wreak havoc on the poor village.

Tanks fire cannons at Zonai Zilla, but they're little match as he rains fire down on the village, leaving it in ruins before descending back into the ocean. The creativity! The cinematography! The editing! It's all pretty fantastic, already racking up 1.7 million views at press time on X/Twitter.

It's also something of a loving tribute to classic Toho Godzilla movies, with the kaiju having such a big year. Apple TV+ recently released MonterVerse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters to positive reviews, Godzilla Minus One hits international theaters this Friday, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is set to debut next year.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, meanwhile, has a number of nominations at next month's Game Awards, including Game of the Year and Best Action/Adventure Game. IGN gave it a 10/10 back in May, with Tom Marks calling it "an unfathomable follow-up, expanding a world that already felt full beyond expectation and raising the bar ever higher into the clouds."

CD Projekt Settles Lawsuit That Alleged It Misled Investors Over Cyberpunk 2077's Launch

CD Projekt has finally settled the class action lawsuit that alleged it misled investors over the launch state of Cyberpunk 2077.

Revealed in a regulatory announcement, CD Projekt confirmed it had received the final approval of the class action settlement, which ends the legal proceedings related to the lawsuit.

The $1.85 million settlement agreement was revealed in December 2021, but the case has been ongoing for longer. Rosen Law Firm first filed the lawsuit on December 24, 2020 as it sought to recover damages for CD Projekt investors under the federal securities law. Settling the suit, as CD Projekt has now done, means no wrongdoing was admitted.

While Cyberpunk 2077 has returned to form and regained the good graces of fans as of 2023, it launched on December 10, 2020 in a sorry state. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game, which of course arrived before the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S launched, were full of performance issues and glitches. While the PC version earned a 9/10 from IGN, Cyberpunk 2077 on consoles received just a 4/10 in our review. Sony even removed it from the PlayStation Store altogether.

The lawsuit therefore alleged CD Projekt "made false and/or misleading statements and/or failed to disclose that Cyberpunk 2077 was virtually unplayable on the current-generation Xbox or Playstation systems due to an enormous number of bugs," among other similar claims.

Developer CD Projekt Red has spent close-to-three years turning Cyberpunk 2077 around, with the release of the Phantom Liberty expansion and game-changing Update 2.0 the exclamation point at the end of its redemption story. An Ultimate Edition with every update and bit of DLC is launching in December 2023.

Phantom Liberty arrived September 26, with Update 2.0 laying its foundation a few days earlier. It completely revamped Cyberpunk 2077 with features such as a new perk system and improved AI and also brought closure to an Elon Musk fan theory, a reference to the late racing legend Ken Block, and bizarre additions to the game's biggest mystery.

In our 9/10 review of the expansion, IGN said: "Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty completes an immense turnaround for CD Projekt Red's future RPG kickstarted with the anime spin-off, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and its latest 2.0 Update."

Baldur’s Gate 3’s Hefty 3-Disc Xbox Series X Physical Edition Includes Patch 5

The Xbox Series X physical edition of Baldur’s Gate 3 includes Patch 5 on-disc, developer Larian Studios has confirmed.

Patch 5 was announced as launching this week, and, as IGN revealed, fixes slowdown issues with Act 3 caused by Patch 4, among many other things.

Fans had wondered if this latest patch would make it onto the physical edition, which is set to launch early 2024. In a post on X/Twitter, Larian director of publishing Michael Douse confirmed the Xbox Series X physical edition will indeed ship with Patch 5 on disc. However, Larian is still working on the exact version for the PlayStation 5 edition.

While the Xbox Series X version of the Baldur’s Gate 3 physical edition comes on a whopping three discs, the PS5 version ships on two discs, and the PC version just one which hosts a custom installer and comes with a Steam key.

“This experiment is what we feel the future of physical media looks like, at least for us at Larian,” Douse said in a statement alongside the announcement. “We spent the last few months learning how to do it from scratch, and put everything we learned from the Collector’s Edition into what we hope is unbeatable value for what we’re considering our standard physical version going forward. If it works out, we’ll keep doing it this way.

"We understand the value of physical media, and while there are clearly increasingly significant challenges when it comes to the archiving of games, we truly believe it’s worth experimenting, even if it means a fuck ton of discs."

The physical edition is sold exclusively on the Larian store, where it's currently available for preorder. The studio notes that it's not a Collector's Edition, so don't panic if you can't get your hands on it right away and certainly do not buy from scalpers.

In addition to an "oversized exclusive game box" and all existing Digital Deluxe content, the physical Deluxe Edition will also include the following:

  • Original soundtrack on 3 CDs
  • Cloth world map
  • Two fabric patches
  • Thirty-two stickers
  • Baldur’s Gate 3 art poster

Larian is currently on a victory lap following the breakout success of Baldur's Gate 3, with seven wins at the recent Golden Joysticks and eight nominations at the upcoming Game Awards. Larian is set to announce Baldur’s Gate 3’s long-awaited Xbox release date at the awards show on December 7, and has even started to tease its "next big game".

Baldur's Gate 3, of course, has been a massive commercial and critical success since its official release on PC in August. IGN gave it a 10/10, praising its "crunchy, tactical RPG combat, a memorable story with complex characters, highly polished cinematic presentation, and a world that always rewards exploration and creativity."

Assassin's Creed Syndicate Is Currently Free on PC

Assassin's Creed Syndicate is currently free on PC as part of a special offer available to anyone with a Ubisoft account.

The 2015 title is currently part of an "exclusive giveaway" on Ubisoft's website that lets players pick up the Victorian London-set Assassin's Creed for nothing. The offer is available until December 6.

There are some very slight caveats in that players must have the aforementioned Ubisoft account and use the Ubisoft Connect launcher to access it instead of Steam or the Epic Games Store, but Assassin's Creed Syndicate is otherwise genuinely free.

Taking on the role of twin protagonists Evie and Jacob Frye living in 1868 London, players must rally and lead the underworld to break the corrupt stranglehold on the capital in a game filled with as much brutal combat as traditional Assassin's Creed gameplay.

It earned an 8/10 in IGN's review. "Assassin's Creed Syndicate pushes its thick lore into the background and delivers the most fun and focussed Assassin's game in a while," we said at the time.

The series has since moved on from the action adventure style gameplay present in Assassin's Creed Syndicate, first with the role-playing game entries Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, and most recently with Mirage which returned the series to its smaller scale, stealth-based roots.

PS5 Slim Bundles

PS5 Slim Digital

Where to Buy a PS5 on Cyber Mobday

It's been notoriously difficult to get your hands on a PS5 since its launch in late 2020 between industry-wide chip shortages and scalpers reselling consoles for nearly $2,000, but the supply has finally caught up to demand for the most part, and now it's far more common to see the consoles in stock in-store and online at most retailers.

If you want a standard, non-Slim bundle deal on the PS5, you can find the Spider-Man 2 PS5 bundle at Amazon and Walmart right now for $499. That's 11% off its usual price of $559.99, and well worth it for what you're getting. If you're looking to buy a standard PS5 console, you can find it at the links below on Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart. This will run you $450 for the disc edition, but gets you the console and a controller so you can start playing right away.

Silent Hill 2 Remake Developer Appeals for Patience as Fans Get Jittery

The developer of the hotly anticipated Silent Hill 2 remake has taken the unusual step of appealing for patience as calls for gameplay from eager fans intensify.

After months of rumour and speculation, Konami announced the Silent Hill 2 remake as part of its Silent Hill Transmission event in October 2022. During the event, Konami showcased a three-minute trailer that provided a look at the famously foggy town in 4K. In addition to providing glimpses of Pyramid Head and other notable elements from the original game, the trailer confirmed that Bloober Team, the Polish studio best known for horror games Layers of Fear and The Medium, had been signed to handle development.

But we’ve not seen anything more of the game in the year since, leaving fans to feed on scraps of information gleaned from interviews. And following the launch of the heavily criticised interactive streaming series Silent Hill: Ascension, and confusion over what sounded like the inclusion of a "special origin story" for Pyramid Head, it’s fair to say fans are eager to see more of the Silent Hill 2 remake.

It looks like Bloober Team is bearing the brunt of the community calls for more footage, which as the game’s developer is perhaps unfair. In a tweet published last week, Bloober directed fans to Konami, the company it said was responsible for Silent Hill’s marketing.

“When could we expect to get some news on the Remake, or is that up to Konami?” Twitter / X user @SodaRMT asked. “It's kinda hard to be stuck in the fog for over a year with nothing new, even some screenshots would be nice.”

Here’s Bloober’s blunt response: “Konami is the publisher of the game and communication is definitely part of their job.”

It appears Bloober has had enough of this sort of thing from fans, so much so that it felt the need to release a statement on its social media channels over the weekend that moves to pressure fans that all is well with the game, but also to point out that announcements will come from Konami, not the developer.

Here’s the statement in full:

“As Bloober team, we are proud to be a part of Konami’s plan for the Silent Hill franchise. Alongside our partner, we are diligently working to ensure the Silent Hill 2 remake attains the highest quality.

“On behalf of our development team, we would like to clarify that the production is progressing smoothly and in accordance with our schedule. We understand that many players around the world are eagerly anticipating news about the game, and we appreciate your dedication.

“However, we kindly ask for a bit more patience. Once Konami, as the game’s publisher, shares more information, we are confident that the wait will be worthwhile

“Thank you for your understanding and support!”

Reaction to the statement is mixed. While there is plenty of support for Bloober, alongside some comments calling the statement what it really is (ask Konami!), concern remains about the status of the Silent Hill 2 remake.

Silent Hill 2 remake is due out on PC via Steam and as a console exclusive for PlayStation 5. It does not have a release window.

Hogwarts Legacy Gets a Big Discount for Cyber Monday

Attention all muggles, a computer simulation about wizardkind has received a rather sizable discount for your bizarre celebration of all things 'cyber'. The game referred to as 'Hogwarts Legacy' is now available for just 40 galleons on the PlayStation 5, or only 30 on PlayStation 4. This will certainly be a discount to revel in.

But, we have also been told that it will only be available for a limited time, so you've got until the witching hour on the 'Cyber Monday' to secure this remarkable offering. For more deals on all things cyber, you can also become a loyal follower for the individual only known as @IGNDeals on the social media network that some may call - X.

IGN bestowed the aforementioned computer simulation a gracious nine out of ten in its initial review earlier this calendar year. The esteemed reviewer seemed thrilled with the results of the game, stating: "In almost every way, this is the Harry Potter RPG I’ve always wanted to play."

"Its open-world adventure captures all the excitement and wonder of the Wizarding World with its memorable new characters, challenging and nuanced combat, and a wonderfully executed Hogwarts student fantasy that kept me glued to my controller for dozens of hours."

13 Best PS5 Game Cyber Monday Deals That Are Already Live

While we love PS5 games, they can be a little on the expensive side at times. As games continue to push the boundaries of what is possible on a console, prices are starting to align with these advancements, leading to the introduction of $70 launch games. Thankfully, these prices don't last forever if you have a bit of patience, and now PlayStation Cyber Monday deals are already here to help with a few top discounts.

We've had our eye on the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals for a while, but now as this is probably your last chance to secure a discount, it's time to stick down our metaphorical flag and declare: these deals are good. We've found Cyber Monday deals from a variety of retailers for the very best games like Final Fantasy 16, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, Diablo 4, and more. But, watch out, as the countdown to the end of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales is now on, and these deals will be gone by the end of the day on November 27.

Final Fantasy 16 Cyber Monday Deals

You can pick up 2023's entry into the Final Fantasy saga for just $34.99, that's a fantastic 50% off right now. If you've yet to play this game, then you should move fast to snap it up. We gave it a 9/10 back in June when it first came out - stating: "Featuring fast, reflex-driven, action-heavy combat, Final Fantasy 16 is certainly a departure from what fans may expect out of a Final Fantasy game, but its excellent story, characters, and world-building are right up there with the best the series has to offer, and the innovative Active Time Lore feature should set a new standard for how lengthy, story-heavy games keep players invested in its world."

Hogwarts Legacy Cyber Monday Deals

There are a couple of wonderful Cyber Monday deals for the Harry Potter game we've always dreamed of. It's down to $30 on PS4, or $40 on PS5, and these are both tremendous discounts going into the holiday season. This is the perfect gift for any fan of the wizarding world. We gave Hogwarts Legacy a 9/10 in our review - stating: "In nearly every way, Hogwarts Legacy is the Harry Potter RPG I’ve always wanted to play. Its open-world adventure captures all the excitement and wonder of the Wizarding World with its memorable new characters, challenging and nuanced combat, and a wonderfully executed Hogwarts student fantasy that kept me glued to my controller for dozens of hours."

Metal Gear Solid - Master Collection Vol. 1 Cyber Monday Deals

Here's one where you get to go: 'It should've been that price in the first place!' -- Well, we'll let you have your fun. The Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Cyber Monday deal isn't something to write home about, but it's the best way to play the classic games on modern consoles right now, and it does come with a lot of content. So, at $39.99, you're getting a reasonable deal here. It's not getting any cheaper, either, so this is the best offer you're going to get.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Cyber Monday Deals

Yes, we gave Modern Warfare 3's campaign a 4/10 (and its multiplayer a 6/10). No, that doesn't mean this specific IGN writer (hi!) is going to tell you not to buy this game -- you can make your own minds up. But, if you are interested, the latest Call of Duty entry is over $10 off in the Cyber Monday sale, which is likely the best deal we're getting if you're looking to play the game over your winter break.

Sonic Superstars Cyber Monday Deals

The latest game in the long line Sonic titles is Sonic Superstars, and while this latest entry isn't getting the same attention as last years break from the formula Sonic Frontiers, it's still one of the top selling games on Amazon right now during the Cyber Monday sales. At $35, a $25 discount compared to the $59.99 MSRP, this is a great deal. We gave Sonic Superstars a 7/10 in our review - stating: "Sonic Superstars has a mix of both interesting and ill-advised new ideas, making it an enjoyable Sonic game but not exactly a Super one."

Star Wars Jedi Survivor Cyber Monday Deals

Walmart is currently the king of Black Friday discounts, as it also has Star Wars Jedi Survivor for just $30, which is a whole $4.99 less than every other retailer right now. This puts Jedi: Survivor at over 50% off, which is one of the best Cyber Monday deals we've seen this year. If you haven't had the chance to pick up Cal's latest adventure, this is a great opportunity to do so. We gave the game a 9/10 in our review.

Diablo 4 Cyber Monday Deals

One of the best games of the year, Diablo 4, is down to just $50 this Black Friday. It's not a huge discount, but it's still a significant one. If you haven't had the chance to pay the incredible ARPG just yet, well this is the perfect opportunity. We gave the game a 9/10 in our review - stating: "Diablo 4 is a stunning sequel with near-perfect endgame and progression design that makes it absolutely excruciating to put down."

God of War Ragnarok Cyber Monday Deals

One of the standout games from 2022 was God of War Ragnarok. If you haven't played this game yet, then you're missing out -- it's truely incredible. We expected this title to pop up among the deals for Cyber Monday this year, and we're just very excited that the 50% discount has gone live so early. Pick up your copy over this weekend for the crazy price of just $35.

The Last of Us Part 2 Cyber Monday Deals

Here us out, as this is a great deal. If you're interested in The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered but haven't bought the core game yet -- you should get this deal. It's down to $19.99 for the physical copy from PS Direct, and this is $20 less than every other retailer right now.

This is a big deal as those who already own The Last of Us Part 2 on PS4 will be able to upgrade to a digital remastered version on PS5 for just $10 on January 19. Save files will also be able to be imported into Part 2 Remastered. Naughty Dog also clarified that upgrades for disc copies of the PS4 version are only available if you have a PS5 with a disc drive.

EA Sports FC 24 Cyber Monday Deals

We might complain about it, but FIFA and now EA Sports FC are some of the best-selling games every single year -- so there's definitely still an appeal out there for happy gamers. If you haven't had the chance to pick up the world-leading soccer sim just yet, well you're in luck as it's 57% off in the Black Friday sales.

Currently available for just $29.99 at retailers like Best Buy, this is a great deal and likely the best offer we're getting on the game until it inevitably ends up on EA Play and Xbox Game Pass come May or June 2024. If you don't want to wait until then, we suggest bagging this deal this Black Friday and Cyber Monday. For digital owners, the game is down to $34.99 on PS5 but you can also save 10% on PS credit right now; so ensure you use that before making any purchases.

The Last of Us Part 1 Cyber Monday Deals

Let's be honest, this is probably the price it should've been in the first place, rather than a whole -- checks notes -- $70? Well, at least it's come down quite heavily in price now to $39.99. If you were hoping for any further discounts, you're out of luck as this is the best we're getting. Still, we think this is quite a good deal for the perfect version of one of the best games ever made. We gave the game a 9/10 in our review - stating: "A gorgeous and well-honed remake of one of the biggest boppers in the PlayStation pantheon, The Last of Us Part I is the best way to play – or replay – Naughty Dog’s esteemed survival classic."

Assassin's Creed Mirage Cyber Monday Deals

Assassin's Creed Mirage has dropped to just $39.99 in the Black Friday sales across most retailers. This is the best deal we're getting on Mirage, otherwise you can always opt for the Deluxe edition at $44.99 instead. We gave the game an 8/10 in our review - stating: "Assassin’s Creed Mirage's back-to-basics approach is a successful first step in returning to the stealthy style that launched this series."

Street Fighter 6 Cyber Monday Deals

What can we say, Capcom has been releasing some absolute gems lately, and the Black Friday deals are good as well. Just like its Capcom brother RE4, Street Fighter 6 is down to $30 at Walmart. We gave the game an amazing 9/10 in our review - stating: "Street Fighter 6 is the most feature-rich a Street Fighter has ever been at launch, but even beyond that, it's roster of 18 characters is excellent, the new mechanics revitalize the one-on-one fighting formula, and it absolutely nails all of the little things that make for a stellar fighting game."

Mortal Kombat 1 Cyber Monday Deals

If you prefer your fighting games to feature significantly more blood and gore, then Mortal Kombat 1 is the one for you. It features fast-paced fighting, plus significantly more murder than you'll find in the likes of Street Fighter 6. It didn't come out long ago, but it's already on sale for just $40. See our 8/10 review for all the reasons why it's worth your time.

Resident Evil 4 Cyber Monday Deals - Out of Stock

Walmart's Black Friday sale is now on, and boy it's brought with it some incredible discounts. $30 for a Game of the Year contender is a great deal, and this is absolutely the best offer we're going to get this Black Friday weekend. We gave the remake a Masterpiece 10/10 in our review - stating: "The Resident Evil 4 remake is the series' most relentlessly exciting adventure rebuilt, refined, and realized to the full extent of its enormous potential." This is such a great deal on such a great game, and we're convinced it's going to sell out before the Cyber Monday sales next week. RE4 is also our top pick for the best Xbox games for Black Friday as well.

Good news, Xbox owners (or anyone buying a gift for an Xbox owner). You can save 10% off Xbox digital gift cards of all denominations right now at Walmart. While Walmart's Black Friday sale may have kinda sorta technically ended, this deal is still very much live, along with a lot of other Walmart deals. Read on for the links.

Xbox Digital Gift Cards are 10% Off

While Black Friday may have ended, the Cyber Monday sales are already kicking in. Amazon has swapped out its sale branding for Cyber Monday, and Walmart and Best Buy will do so on November 26. Many of the same deals will remain live throughout the transition and through Cyber Monday proper. Most retailers will also offer additional Cyber Monday-specific deals as well.

What Can You Spend Xbox Gift Cards On?

Xbox gift cards can be spent on digital games and in-game items for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. You can also use it on services like Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, as well as PC Game Pass Ultimate.

Xbox credit is also good for a whole heap of other items on online storefronts run by Microsoft. You can use it to buy digital movies and TV shows. It's also good to use on physical Xbox hardware and accessories. In other words, it's a very versatile gift card.

The credit never expires or dwindles. There are no fees for holding onto it. It's good stuff, and any Xbox owner can likely find plenty to do with it.

For more deals along these lines, check out our Xbox Black Friday/Cyber Monday roundup. You'll find discounts on Xbox storage expansion and many of 2023's major games, including Resident Evil 4 and more. And for a wider array of discounts, take a look at the Amazon Cyber Monday sale.

The Best Cyber Monday SSD Deals for PS5: Get a 2TB with Heatsink for Under $100

Did you just pick up a brand new PlayStation 5 console for Black Friday? Or are you a long-time console owner who has finally used up all 1TB of the PS5's base storage? Fortunately, Cyber Monday is unquestionably the best time of year to score a fast and reliable PS5 compatible gaming SSD at the lowest price possible. Score a 2TB SSD, which triples your storage space, for under $100!

If you're looking for PS5 games or accessories, check out the best PlayStation Cyber Monday deals.

Cyber Monday Deal: Lexar NM790 2TB PS5 SSD with Heatsink for $94.99

The Lexar NM790 is currently the least expensive 2TB PS5 SSD on Amazon. It comes with a preinstalled aluminum heatsink that looks like it will do the job properly, it's considerably faster than the 5,600MB/s minimum recommendation, and it was specifically made to fit in the PS5's drive bay slot without obtrusion. At this price, there's little reason to choose another SSD if your only intent is to expand your PS5 storage.

Cyber Monday Deal: Crucial P5 Plus 2TB SSD for $88.99

The Crucial P5 Plus meets all the requirements for your PS5 SSD upgrade. It supports transfer speeds of up to 6,660MB/s which is well above the 5,500MB/s minimum threshold. Yes there are faster SSDs out there, but if your intention is to put this in your PS5, then that extra speed is worthless because you're bottlenecked by the original PS5 SSD. If you're worried about opening up your PS5 case, don't worry it's very easy. Crucial has an official YouTube PS5 SSD install guide. Pick up a PS5 heatsink off Amazon for $7.

Cyber Monday Deal: Nextorage 1TB PS5 SSD with Heatsink for $55.99

There's an interesting story behind Nextorage Japan. Nextorage describes itself as a company that was "created by a group of ex-Sony engineers and staff with over 20 years of experience in the development of memory and storage products". Nextorage was actually originally created by Sony in 2019 as an SSD sub-division about a year before the PS5 was released. Presumably this was to be the basis for an official SSD sold by Sony themselves. For whatever reason, Sony decided to ditch that idea and sold this business to another stakeholder in the company, Phison, in 2022. Phison is another large reputable company that specializes in solid state memory controllers. You'll find their controllers in name-brand SSDs like Seagate, Corsair, and Sabrent. Under Phison, Nextorage Japan eventually accomplished the goal of releasing an SSD catered specifically for the PS5 console in the form of this product right here.

Cyber Monday Deal: Seagate Game Drive 2TB SSD with Heatsink $149.99

Now here's an SSD you don't see discounted often. The Seagate Game Drive is only the second SSD to be officially licensed for the PlayStation console. What that means is this SSD is pretty much guaranteed to work with your PS5 with no problems whatsoever. It's pricier than the other options in this list, but it's still a hefty discount off MSRP and the lowest price we've seen. Seagate is a very reputable brand.

Cyber Monday Deal: WD Black SN850X 4TB PS5 SSD for $229.99

The SN850X is the latest generation of WD's flagship Black series M.2 SSDs. It's easily one of the fastest SSDs on the market. There are only a few SSDs out right now that can match its speed. Off the top of my head, the only SSDs I can think of are the new Samsung 990 Pro and the SK Hynix P41 Platinum. The SN850X also makes for an excellent PS5 SSD. It is identical to the SN850P, which is an officially licensed PS5 SSD. The only caveat is that this particular model doesn't include a built-in heatsink. That is easily remedied by picking up a PS5 heatsink off Amazon for $7.

Cyber Monday Deal: Corsair MP600 2TB PS5 SSD with Heatsink $110

Corsair is a very well known brand for DIY PC builders. Corsair makes some of the best gaming products on the market, and that includes solid-state memory like RAM and SSDs. The MP600 Pro is Corsair's fastest M.2 SSD and the "LPX" model is "optimized for PS5" because it includes a rugged preinstalled heatsink that is slim enough to fit in the PS5 bay without any issues. We rated it the best PS5 SSD for 2023.

Cyber Monday Deal: Samsung 980 Pro 2TB M.2 SSD with Heatsink $119.99

Samsung SSDs need no introduction. They've made some of the most popular and reliable PS5 SSDs on the market. The 980 Pro has been out for a long time, way back in January of 2020. A testament to its reliability is the fact that Samsung didn't feel any need to release any newer flagship model until only this year. In terms of performance, it's no longer the fastest SSD on the market (the 990 Pro is), but it's still a very fast drive. It certainly more than meets the minimum 5600MB/s speed requirement to be used as a PS5 storage upgrade, with speeds of up to 7,100MB/s.

All the Black Friday SSD Deals for your PS5 Console

What is a PS5-compatible SSD?

An SSD that expands your PS5's storage is essentially the same SSD that goes into your gaming PC. However, because of the PS5 has certain requirements that must be met for full compatibility. These are:

  • The SSD and its heatsink must fit in the PS5 drive bay (requirement)
  • The SSD must have a PCIe 4.0 interface (requirement)
  • The SSD should have a minimum read speed of 5600MB/s (recommended)
  • The SSD should have a heatsink for proper cooling (recommended)

An SSD that is slower than 5,600MB/s should still work. In fact, if it's close to the rated speed, you may never notice any difference. The reason Sony gives this recommendation is that the stock SSD that comes with the PS5 is rated at 5,600MB/s. If you add a slower SSD, you will bottleneck your stock SSD.

Likewise, you may not need a heatsink. SSDs are rated for higher temps than what you'd normally expect to achieve even inside a PS5 that's running fult tilt. However, there's no real airflow around the SSD bay and SSDs do get pretty hot. We'd recommend getting a preinstalled heatsink or installing one yourself for peace of mind and potentially to prevent thermal throttling and extending the lifespan of your SSD.

Can I use this SSD in my gaming PC?

Absolutely! PS5-compatible SSDs will work with any PC with an available M.2 slot that supports PCIe 4.0 M.2 solid state drives. In fact, if you get a PS5-compatible SSD, you're essentially guaranteed to get an SSD that's going to perform extremely well because of the higher rated speed.

Black Friday PS5 Accessories Deals Still Live on Controllers, SSDs, and More

Thanksgiving may be over, but Black Friday deals are still sticking around, at least until Cyber Monday sweeps them aside. There are plenty of discounts for PlayStation owners to enjoy this year. Alongside the excellent PS5 console bundle deals, you can also save on a variety of PS5 accessories right now. This includes DualSense controllers (which have been knocked down to $49) to SSDs to console covers. Below, we've broken down the best deals on PS5 accessories still available in this year's Black Friday sales so you can pick up some exciting new items for your favorite console.

Black Friday 2023: Save Big on PS5 DualSense Controllers

Considering DualSense controllers usually run for $74.99, it's well worth it to grab them now at this discounted price of $49. The colors available usually sell out quickly, too, so you'll want to act fast before your favorite disappears.

These SSD Deals Are Our Favorites From Black Friday

Scoring a 2TB SSD for roughly $100 is an absolute steal, and a 1TB SSD for around $50 is a solid deal, too, and these options from Silicon Power and Nextorage Japan are here to make your day. They also come with pre-installed heatsinks, which are a must for PS5 users!

Get $10 Off PS5 Console Covers

Over at PlayStation Direct you can also get a $10 discount on console covers. Whether you're looking for Nova Pink or Starlight Blue, they have a great selection marked down to $44.99. You can also get the PS5 Darkplates 2.0 on dBrand for $10 off.

What PS5 Accessories Do You Need?

While some items, like the console covers, are purely a fun investment to personalize your console, it's always nice to pick up new controllers. Not only does PlayStation offer a great array of colors to choose from, but having a backup is always handy if your current one breaks or if someone else is coming over to play a co-op game. SSDs are also a nice investment for your PS5 so you can expand your storage. The PS5 doesn't offer much on its own, so having an additional SSD with a heatsink ready to go can help you out as you build up your PlayStation library.

These PlayStation accessory deals just scratch the surface of what's still available for Black Friday. In our roundup of PlayStation and PS5 Black Friday deals, you can find plenty more discounts on games and, more importantly, bundle deals. There are a couple of bundles featuring the PS5 Slim that are well worth checking out before they sell out. And if you want to see some more gift options for the holiday season, we also have a PlayStation gift guide featuring a variety of items that make for great gifts for those in your life with a love for PlayStation.

Cyber Monday PS5 Console Deals: These Sales Are Already Live

With key sales going live this weekend, there's no better time than now to secure that PS5 Cyber Monday deal. PlayStation Black Friday sales will extend into this weekend, but Cyber Monday is the new term you'll need to get comfortable with for the next few days. Amazon already has its Cyber Monday sale live, with Walmart and Best Buy following up tomorrow. Just so aware, any of the discounts we are mentioning here will expire on November 27 at 11:59 PM PT -- so there's a limited time left to snag these bargains.

By far the most popular PS5 deal going into the Cyber Monday weekend is the Spider-Man 2 slim model bundle. It's down to $499 and includes Insomniac's next entry into its Spidey saga at no extra cost. We gave Spider-Man 2 a good 8/10 in our review - stating: "Marvel's Spider-Man 2 delivers Insomniac's best tale yet, and despite its open world falling short, is a reliably fun superhero power trip."

If you're not keen on Spidey, then we've got some good news. The next best bundle also costs $499 and includes the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 at no extra cost. That's another excellent deal, and well worth considering as a gift for any keen FPS fan who hasn't yet upgraded to a PS5.

Remember, if you don't want either game included in the bundles, you can also just sell on the digital code for additional savings. However, if you're looking for more deals on Call of Duty products, head over to the IGN Store to see our Call of Duty collection.

But we still hear one big question every time we talk about it: what about PS5 slim digital? Well, we can now answer that, as it's now available to buy for $449.99. There's no preorder period or chasing down stock, it's just available - huzzah! There aren't any special digital PS5 Black Friday bundles out at the time of writing, so there's no free game unlike the PS5 slim disc version -- but that's still an option if you are 100% digital as those games are digital copies as well.

Actor Who Played Michael in GTA 5 Swatted While Streaming, Defends Rockstar Despite Fan Outcry

The actor who played Grand Theft Auto 5 co-protagonist Michael De Santa was swatted while streaming GTA Online, but has defended developer Rockstar Games despite fan outcry to the contrary.

Ned Luke received a call while streaming the game on November 23 that informed him his property was currently being swatted.

Swatting is a dangerous harassment technique with ties to video games and streamers in particular in which personal information is obtained and emergency services, usually armed police, are called to the person's home.

Fans of Luke were quick to call out Rockstar for its alleged failure to protect players' IP addresses while playing GTA Online but the actor refuted these claims. "Y’all jumping to some large ass conclusions," Luke said.

"This had nothing to do with Rockstar. These assholes leaked my private info years ago and have been doing this s**t since. Anyone’s info is available online if you are sick enough to really wanna find it."

Swatting has been a persistent issue within the streaming community for several years, with the likes of the Fortnite world champion Kyle "Bugha" Giersdorf made victim of it aged just 16. The dangers of swatting have unfortunately been made clear, with police killing 28-year-old Andrew Finch as the result of a hoax phone call to emergency services in the United States' first fatal swatting incident.

Cult of the Lamb to Get Significant Free Sins of the Flesh Update in 2024

Cult of the Lamb developer Massive Monster has announced a significant free content update coming to the game in 2024.

Sins of the Flesh is due out in very early 202, and includes new features and stories, Massive Monster said in a post on X/Twitter. “We have been working extremely hard on this update, and there is soooo much more content coming to the game!” it added.

Cult of the Lamb is a roguelike with base management elements that enjoyed critical acclaim upon its 2022 launch. It casts players in the role of a possessed lamb saved from annihilation by an ominous stranger, and who must repay their debt by building a loyal following in his name.

Players must collect and use resources to build new structures, and perform dark rituals to appease the gods. IGN’s Cult of the Lamb review returned an 8/10. We said: “Cult of the Lamb is as adorable as it is unsettling, an eclectic mix of genres and themes that come together extremely well.”

Massive Monster was at the heart of September’s backlash against controversial policy changes at game engine maker Unity. Massive Monster threatened to delete the Unity-made Cult of the Lamb on January 1 were the changes to happen. Unity subsequently apologised and made changes, and CEO John Riccitiello subsequently stepped down.

Prison Architect 2 Spotted Online

It looks like Prison Architect 2 will soon be revealed after a listing for the game popped up online.

X/Twitter user @Kurakasis flagged that Prison Architect 2 has been rated by Korea's Game Rating and Administration Committee.

Publisher Paradox (of Crusader Kings and Stellaris) has yet to announce Prison Architect 2, but it was teased in May alongside the original game’s Sunset Update. A trailer, below, thanking fans for supporting the game also teased a 3D sequel. In the trailer's final scene, a 2D inmate pops into 3D, much to the shock of everyone around him.

Prison Architect is the hugely successful builder simulation game from indie developer Introversion. IGN’s Prison Architect review returned an 8/10. We said: “Prison Architect is one of the most in-depth, satisfying builder games in ages, if you can get past the initiation.”

Introversion sold the Prison Architect intellectual property to Paradox in 2019, with Double Eleven taking over development duties. Introversion went on to release the well-received spaceship construction game, The Last Starship, which is currently in Early Access on Steam.

It will be interesting to see how Prison Architect manages the transition from 2D to 3D, given its 2D art style was a key part of the original game’s appeal. IGN has asked Paradox for comment.

How Valve Finally Fixed a Half-Life Bug That’s Almost as Old as the Game Itself

A quarter century after it came out, the original Half-Life is enjoying a new lease of life after developer Valve released a surprise update. But there was more to come. In the days that followed the launch of the massive Half-Life 25th Anniversary update, Valve issued a new patch that fixed one bug that had afflicted the game for decades.

The bug occurred within a famous scene from chapter six, called Blast Pit, in which an alien tentacle crashes through a glass screen, knocks a scientist to the floor, then proceeds to drag him out of the room and into its terrifying clutches. It's a dramatic, impactful scene, but if you looked closely, you could see that the animations of the tentacle alien and the scientist were out of sync, which caused the tentacle to appear as if it was dragging the scientist away without actually touching him.

The video below shows how the scene looked before it was fixed, courtesy of X/Twitter user @VinciusMedeiro6:

When Half-Life’s 25th anniversary update launched November 20, fans expressed their disappointment that this long-standing bug had endured. Fans also picked up on the fact that Valve designer Dario Casali had called out the bug in a video playthrough of Half-Life published earlier in November. “We’re going to have to fix these,” Casali said in the video.

Meanwhile, the bug appears in the accompanying Half-Life: 25th Anniversary Documentary during a sequence that shows the scene working properly during an early stage of development before shifting to release gameplay footage that includes the busted animations. It’s made a little more glaring by the unfortunate voiceover from Valve developers who big-up the animation work as the bug is inadvertently shown to the viewer.

Fans thought that was that. But then this week, Valve issued a further update to Half-Life that finally squished the pesky bug. "Fixed timing for the sequence where a tentacle grabs a scientist in Blast Pit," the patch notes said.

In a social media post, Valve programmer Ben Burbank explained the situation. Valve had wanted to fix the bug for the 25th anniversary update, but “other stuff took priority pre-ship”, Burbank said.

“It's not a systemic bug and seems to largely be isolated to this cutscene (largely because it's the only cutscene that seems to depend heavily on syncing a bunch of animations and also has a part in the middle where an actor navigates through space before playing an animation.”

Valve had three options: attempt a code fix, change the animations that play, or change the map so the timing works. Valve chost the last one. “If we fixed the sequence so that the scientist timing worked out, a player could still stand in the doorway and shoot the scientist, interrupting the sequence, and then he would play his animation in an insane way,” Burbank said. “So we wanted to change how the sequence was triggered to be uninterruptible.

“That said, recompiling the map was creating a bunch of changes in the resulting binary space partitioning (remember, these maps were last compiled on a Windows 95/98 computer). Any bsp difference could cause minor but annoying pathing and collision bugs. Didn't want that.

“Hence, I just hex edited the map. Triggering the animation on the door opening (some community mods did this with decompiled or recompiled versions of the maps) instead of when the player walks through the door ensures the player can't shoot the scientist before things start syncing. The sequence is slightly different but plays more closely to what the alpha maps ran when this was authored.”

Here's how the famous Half-Life scene now looks, again courtesy of X/Twitter user @VinciusMedeiro6:

It’s cool to see Valve fuss over bugs in a 25-year-old video game, but then this is Half-Life we’re talking about, and the bug in question was showcased in a documentary about its development. You can understand the developers wanting to stamp it out, even if it passed most Half-Life players by.

Danny O’Dwyer, director and editor of the Half-Life: 25th Anniversary Documentary, provided some additional context on this Half-Life bug. It seems the animations lined up as intended when Half-Life came out in 1998, but a post-launch update broke them.

O’Dwyer told IGN the tentacle scene ran into trouble at some stage over Half-Life’s time on Steam, although it’s hard to pin down exactly when all these years later. “Back in the day the animations were in lockstep, but something happened over the years that caused them to get out of sync,” O’Dwyer said. In his social media posts, Valve’s Burbank said those who had a Half-Life launch day CD and played the game on computers running at least Windows 2000 or newer would experience the bug.

“I was only working on the documentary side on the Anniversary celebration but I know from talking to some of the team working on the new content and updates that they were trying to fix as many bugs as possible,” O’Dwyer continued.

“I let them know about a few we'd come across during filming and gameplay capture. Stuff like the exploding barrels at the start of Surface Tension that no longer shot into the sky like they did at retail — Dario Casali pointed that out during an interview.

“Fast forward to when the documentary comes out and we had a part of it where the de-synched tentacle was front and centre. Most of the folks at Valve didn't see the documentary until it went live and I heard that it was bugging them that they hadn’t fixed that tentacle yet.

It's just amazing to realize that they jumped back in the code to fix such a small element of a 25-year-old game.

“A few days later the patch was pushed with the tentacle fix. It's just amazing to realize that they jumped back in the code to fix such a small element of a 25-year-old game. The whole thing is just hilarious. I was playing Half Life: Deathmatch on my Steam Deck over the weekend, smiling at how outrageous this whole update was. It was a great way to celebrate a game that means so much to so many people.”

Players, too, are celebrating Valve’s follow-up patch. “The Blast Pit tentacle animation has been fixed. This is not a drill,” wrote redditor Rampage470 to the Half-Life community. “November 22, 2023: the most important date in human history,” said knb128pl, perhaps getting a little carried away. “Somebody at Valve is super geeked about Half-Life right now. I wonder what else they might work on?” pondered Left4DayZ1.

We’ll leave this here: Half-Life 2 turns 25 in just six years.

Xbox Series S Consoles Have Gotten a Huge Discount for Black Friday

If you have yet to purchase either a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, there is never a better time than Black Friday. Both systems have received massive exclusives in 2023, further bolstering their offerings. A great entry point right now is the Xbox Series S, which happens to be on sale with the new Starter Bundle. This bundle is only $234.99 at Dell for Black Friday, a 22% discount from the standard price. In the UK this bundle is down to just £189 as well.

Grab the Xbox Series S Starter Bundle for Only $234.99

The Xbox Series S Starter Bundle includes everything you need to get started in the Xbox ecosystem. Starting off, the bundle includes the Xbox Series S console - packing 512GB of storage, so you might want to look into additional storage in the future. You'll also get your standard Xbox controller in Robot White. And the last thing included is a 3-month voucher for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, essentially saving you another $50 on top. You can also consider the standard Xbox Series S deal for $224.99 at Dell, but it doesn't include Game Pass so it's definitely not as good of an offer.

Overall, this bundle offers a great starting point if you're not the owner of an Xbox or PlayStation yet. It's the cheapest entry into either ecosystem, and the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate voucher will allow you to take full advantage of the Xbox content offerings. Three months of Game Pass will take you into early 2024 and cover releases like Persona 3 Reload or Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

Walmart has many other deals you don't want to miss this Black Friday. For example, Xbox Controllers are priced at only $45, which is 25% off. You can always use an extra controller, so this is a great deal to combine with the Starter Bundle. Additionally, the Sony Bravia XR A90J is only $1,396, which is the best Black Friday TV deal. It boasts blazing sequential speeds of 7,450MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write and random speeds of 1400K/1550K IOPS. Unlike most other SSDs, the components are manufactured in-house. The Samsung 990 Pro works superbly in your PS5, but from a purely performance perspective it's overkill. Pick up PS5 heatsink off Amazon for $7.
