Mojang Brings Minecraft Dungeons Development to an End After Hitting 25 Million Players

Mojang has ended development on Minecraft Dungeons three years after launch and after hitting an impressive 25 million players.

Minecraft Dungeons is a dungeon crawler spin-off that launched for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One in May 2020, and for Xbox Series X and S in February 2021. IGN’s Minecraft Dungeons review returned a 7/10. “Simple and fun to play, Minecraft Dungeons is a good entry-level dungeon crawler, but it doesn't dig too deep,” we said.

In a note to players, Mojang said Minecraft Dungeons “exceeded our wildest dreams”, but “every journey has an end”. Update 1.17, released November 2022, goes down as Minecraft Dungeons’ last, and now Mojang has moved on to new projects “that continue to explore experiences in the Minecraft universe”.

This means there are no new features or content updates planned for Minecraft Dungeons. “We do intend to continue bringing new experiences to the Minecraft universe and give our team the freedom to keep exploring the types of games they're passionate about — just as they did with Dungeons!” Mojang continued.

Despite this, Minecraft Dungeons remains online and playable. “There are still plenty of adventures to be had together with your friends; dungeons to spelunk, ancient hunts to conquer, and toppling a Tower whose layout will continue to rotate,” Mojang said.

Mojang’s work on Minecraft continues, of course. In April, Mojang released Minecraft Legends, a strategy spin-off that combines traditional Minecraft gameplay with real-time strategy elements.
