Fable fans have been waiting ever so impatiently for any news on the next-gen reboot of the beloved fantasy RPG franchise, and 2023's Xbox Games Showcase has finally delivered, with a reveal courtesy of The IT Crowd's Richard Ayoade.
Xbox began teasing Fable's appearance at its showcase at the end of May, and we finally got to see gameplay, combat, and the classic Fable humor, as well as teases of plot including giants, vegetables, and...sandwiches? Yes, Ayoade seems to be in Fable in the role of "Dave," a vegetable enthusiast...a giant one, that the player climbs a beanstalk to confront. We'll have to wait for more details on that one.
Unfortunately, we didn't get a release date for Fable today, but like Xbox's other first-party offerings, it will eventually be on Game Pass day one.
The Fable reboot was first announced in 2020 and we didn't learn too much except that it will be a "new beginning" for the franchise and would be developed by Forza Horizon studio Playground Games. This reboot will be the first mainline Fable game since 2010's Fable 3 and is undoubtedly one of Xbox Game Studios' biggest upcoming titles.
Fable also had a few spin-offs, including Fable: The Journey for Kinect and Fable Heroes, and it almost had a co-op game called Fable Legends but it was canceled before it fully saw the light of day.
We here at IGN are also very excited for the Fable reboot, especially considering we called Playground Games' Forza Horizon 5 our game of the year in 2021.
