The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: Here's What Comes in Each Edition

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild, taking place in the same version of Hyrule, though with numerous changes. It's set to release exclusively for Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023. Release day is getting closer and closer, and we've even gotten an in-depth look at gameplay during a recent online presentation.

This is the first Nintendo Switch game that costs $69.99, both in physical and digital form, putting it in line with MSRP for many PS5 and Xbox Series X|S games. In addition to the game, you can also preorder a new Link amiibo, as well as a Zelda-themed Switch OLED console, plus accessories. And, in addition to the standard edition, a collector's edition will also be available, featuring an art book, pins, and more -- but it's currently sold out. There's a lot to cover, but we have all the details you need below.

Shortcuts

Preorder The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The standard edition retails for $69.99, or £59.99 in the UK, and just comes with the game itself, with no additional bonus items.

Preorder Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Switch OLED

If you want a drop-dead gorgeous new Zelda-themed model of the Switch OLED, you can preorder one right here.

Preorder Tears of the Kingdom Switch Pro Controller and Carry Case

Also up for preorder are a Zelda-themed Pro Controller (sold out at the time of this writing) and a Switch carrying case.

Link - Tears of the Kingdom amiibo

It would hardly be a Zelda game if Nintendo didn't release an amiibo alongside it. This is the Tears of the Kingdom Link amiibo, set to release May 12, the same day as the game.

Other Link amiibo Reprints

In addition to the Tears of the Kingdom amiibo above, Nintendo is reprinting two previous Link amiibos. They're out May 12 as well, so you can bet they'll have some kind of interaction with the new game.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Preorder Bonus

While there are no universal preorder bonuses available at all retailers, a few retailers are offering bonuses of their own.

  • Preorder at Best Buy to get a free art print.
  • Preorder at GameStop to get a free wooden plaque (see above). Note that people who order online are supposed to print their confirmation page and bring it to a local store to receive their plaque.
  • Preorder at Walmart and you'll get a free Zelda wall hanging with your purchase.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Is Game Voucher Eligible

One of the benefits a Nintendo Switch Online membership is that it lets you use Game Vouchers. The idea is, you buy a pair of game vouchers for $99.98, and you can use them on eligible digital games on the eShop, effectively making each game cost $49.99.

Since The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom normally costs $69.99, using a voucher basically gets you a $20 discount. Not too shabby if you're an NSO member who wants to buy the game in digital format.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Collector's Edition

Nintendo has announced that a collector's edition of the game for $129.99. It has already gone out of stock at all of the retailers, but occasionally one will get more stock momentarily, before it sells out again almost instantly. Here's what's included in the collector's edition of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom:

  • Art book
  • Pin set
  • Steelbook case
  • Iconart poster

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Trailers

What Is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

First announced with a teaser trailer at E3 2019 (RIP), Tears of the Kingdom is a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. To say expectations are high would be underselling it. Many fans agree that BotW is one of -- if not the -- best games ever made. Nintendo has been playing its cards close to the vest, mostly just showing Link's new abilities in a gameplay reveal last month.

We know that Tears of the Kingdom takes place in the same version of Hyrule as Breath of the Wild. You can see similar landmarks in the new footage. This time around, though, a bunch of islands are floating in the sky, and Link can go up to them and skydive back down.

The controversial weapon durability is back, and Link's new abilities include rewinding time on an object. So if a platform falls from the sky world, for instance, Link can hop on it and reverse its time to make it float back up, carrying him like an elevator to the clouds.

There's still plenty we don't know about The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but with the May 12 release date, we won't have to wait long to find out for ourselves.
