Square Enix Pokes Fun at Itself by Giving Away Infamous Low-Poly Grapes from Final Fantasy 14

Square Enix is officially in on the joke surrounding Final Fantasy 14's infamous low-poly grapes as the publisher is giving away real versions of them at Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival.

Square Enix announced a goody bag for those attending the fan event in Las Vegas on July 28-29. Among the random bits of merch in that bag is a phyical version of the grapes that became an instant meme upon release of the Endwalker expansion.

Though the chunky piece of DLC was generally loved by fans, the internet erupted in accumulative laughter at one piece of its environment which featured the cuboid grapes.

Anyone with a ticket to Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival will get the grapes alongside a crossbody bag featuring the event logo, a 10th anniversary pin, a Loporrit Carrot pen, a Grebuloff magnet, and an Azem's Crystal keychain.

It's unclear if these exact items will also be given away at the upcoming Fan Festivals taking place in Europe and Japan.

In our 9/10 review of the latest major expansion, IGN said: "Final Fantasy 14's Endwalker expansion brings its longest story arc to a satisfying close and cements its place as one of the best Final Fantasy stories ever told."

Overwatch 2 Players Should Expect a Multi-Season Gap Between Story Missions Blizzard says

Overwatch 2 likely won’t get any further story missions for at least the next two seasons following the launch of Season 6, Invasion, according to the game’s executive producer Jared Neuss.

"Don't expect the next round [of story missions] in the next season and the season after that, or anything like that," commented Neuss during a recent Twitch appearance alongside streamer Emongg, reported on by GamesRadar. "It is very much like trying to find that balance between getting [story missions] in front of players quickly because we love story stuff, and giving ourselves enough time to make changes or add features."

Neuss revealed during a seperate Twitch stream in May earlier this year that Blizzard was outright cancelling Overwatch 2’s highly anticipated PvE Hero mode, much to the chagrin of the series' many fans. The move was particularly frustrating as some players viewed the addition of the PvE elements as a key difference between Overwatch 2 and its 2016 predecessor.

Instead, Blizzard said it would focus on the release of story missions, which, according to Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller, “take place on huge maps with new enemies” while featuring “fast paced, co-op gameplay”, along with cutscenes and story cinematics. However, the community was further incensed when it was revealed players would have to buy a $15 digital content bundle In order to partake in the upcoming story missions.

"To be fair, there's a bunch of stuff that we want to do next year, or that are already in development for next year, that will fill the gaps that people will have in between," said Neuss. "We're trying to make it so that it doesn't feel like 'and then there's nothing' for a long extended period of time. It's more like 'there's this cool thing!' and 'there's this other narrative thing', 'there's this other narrative thing' - we keep telling interesting stories and moving that all forward."

Overwatch 2’s next story missions are due to release as part of the upcoming sixth season of the team based shooter, titled Invasion, which is set to land on August 10. However, judging by Neuss’ wording, it seems unlikely that Blizzard will release any more story missions in 2023.

In IGN’s 8/10 review, we noted “Overwatch 2 breathes new life into what was once the sharpest multiplayer shooter around, before it had its edges severely dulled by Blizzard’s attention shifting away”.

Life Is Strange: Stephs Story Shows a Franchise Still Determined to Change Video Games

Few franchises have received as much praise for their narratives as Life is Strange, so it isn’t a total surprise that the series just received a spin-off in the form of the novel Steph’s Story. This might seem to some gamers, however, like a spin-off too far. Video game adaptations don’t exactly have a reputation for capturing the quality of the source material. However, here is a genuinely great piece of work that reflects a series of stories keen to punch above expectations.

A History of Video Game Novels

Many of the most significant series in gaming have leaped across to the printed page. Doom is the perfect example of an unlikely candidate making that jump. Its original two titles were basically plotless games that managed to spawn a galaxy-spanning quartet of novels. Halo is undoubtedly the most successful example, having churned out 30 novels and 15 comic book series.

There tend to be common threads amidst pretty much every example, however, that makes these feats less impressive. Sometimes they’ll bring in video game mechanics, the first Doom tale being uniquely laughable in how its protagonist scurries around for keycards and avoids acid pits. Halo is just simply workmanlike, unable to capture the games' surprising awe and wonder amidst otherwise familiar military fiction.

Halo is just simply workmanlike, unable to capture the games' surprising awe and wonder amidst otherwise familiar military fiction.

There’s also a timely point of comparison with Resident Evil, a series which has sold millions of games but has an extensive number of lesser-known books. There were seven novels released in the West in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, and many others that have never been translated into English. It’s perhaps telling as to their quality that they haven’t been reprinted recently, and that the notoriously poor films starring Milla Jovovich are much better known.

The existence of books can’t be seen, either, as symbolic of the narrative demanding to leap onto the printed page. Resident Evil is, after all, the franchise that jumped the shark somewhere between boulder-punching Chris Redfield and the infamous “Jill Sandwich” line. It’s representative, instead, of a corporate-driven era where even Sonic the Hedgehog has had multiple animated shows and two concurrent comic books.

The Life Is Strange Expanded Universe

It’s become abundantly clear over the decades that not every franchise needs adaptation, and especially does not ask to appear on the page. Life is Strange, however, carries somewhat less risk because it’s a franchise that demands being treated with respect. The original tale received a BAFTA for its narrative in 2016, beating out widely, reverently praised competitors like The Witcher 3 and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. It had devastating emotion, rich characters, and profound ideas that have kept the franchise going for nearly a decade. Part of what makes the games work so well is the player choice, but there’s been enough care and attention to translate even that in a way that makes sense within different mediums.

The long-running comic book sequels have already set an impressive standard, as they carry on Life is Strange’s legacy with much more than the bare minimum. Even the most casual observer would notice that they are absolutely gorgeous, and this is a quality that threads right from the start of the run in 2018 to its conclusion in 2022. There are so many images that are astounding enough to be worthy of framing on the wall. Most important, however, is how they capture the characters so perfectly that you never doubt this is an official follow-up to the games. These are qualities which can’t be said even for many of the halfway good, often visually drab Star Wars comics from across the years.

Real effort was put into making the comics more than a time-filler or safe reminder of what’s already been. The work that’s been done to deepen this existing universe mirrors the acclaimed video game sequels of Before the Storm and True Colors, developed by a different, similarly talented studio to the series’ originators. They give much-needed diversity to the cast of characters, for one, with iconic returnees Max and Chloe having a wider, less white circle of friends. They also deepen what are already challenging themes by testing the choices in the game, interrogating whether its characters can live with them. It is a little too optimistic given that it follows its source’s darkest ending, but is still a thoughtful, gorgeous, and altogether exceptional sequel.

Why Steph's Story Succeeds

Translating this world into book form, however, seemed like a risky decision that could’ve pushed the story’s writing to breaking point. Life is Strange has, at worst, been a bit too earnest and even a little contrived – yet its atmosphere is able to make those concerns almost moot. This book, Steph’s Story, has the particularly difficult task of weaving together the backstory for fan-favourite Steph, a self-assured, Dungeons & Dragons-loving, punky lesbian. There’s a high level of responsibility to not tarnish what fans know about the character whilst also feeling like it’s exploring an important part of the character’s life. Thankfully, the book makes the most of its format, focusing on the thoughts, feelings, and subtleties of an unseen period in Steph’s life.

Thankfully, the book makes the most of its format, focusing on the thoughts, feelings, and subtleties of an unseen period in Steph’s life.

Steph’s Story feels like genuinely quality fiction, exploring the mindsets of the complex lead and her equally wounded girlfriend, Izzy. Her backstory largely involves her trying to cope with the destruction of Arcadia Bay in one of the original title’s endings, whilst navigating a troubled relationship. It explores some serious issues through this journey, whether it’s seasonal affective disorder, transphobia, or handling the needs of friends, family, and partners. The series’ focus on choice is still central, too, in exploring how big and small actions can change our relationships. Its realistic approach and intimate storytelling make it one of the most mature Life is Strange tales.

Most video game adaptations fail because they don’t take advantage of the opportunities that the written word offers. This book follows a pattern set already by the comics of doing more than expanding on lore, or giving gamers the chance to spend more time in a much-loved universe. It’s a rich enough read that it improves the games by making a more distinctive character, and True Colours’ affection for its characters better-earned. But it largely uses the source material as a launchpad, trusting fans to engage with an adventure that isn’t reliant on ideas put forward before. Steph’s Story doesn’t feel like it has been downgraded to reach the page, and has the rare achievement of being an essential, independent part of its series.

It isn’t much of a surprise that Life is Strange’s achievements across mediums aren’t widely discussed, given that stories are sensitive, women-led ones which involve little violence. The Last of Us is an equally accomplished, cross-medium success that is character driven too, but has seen its appeal aided by the grim tone and macho violence. It doesn’t matter how much that’s subverted, as those familiar touchstones are still there. Video gaming might have produced countless great works that don’t lean on such conventions, but the public imagination still is hooked on the idea of its defining titles being epics of adrenaline, machismo, and murder. Life is Strange shows the potential of video game storytelling to cross mediums, and if the industry is to grow, these achievements need recognition no matter how much they buck trends.

Xbox Storage Expansion Card Reaches Its Lowest Price Ever in the UK

While the discounts haven't reached PS5 SSD levels of brilliance, the Seagate Xbox Storage Expansion Card, 1TB model, has dropped to its lowest price ever in the UK. It's now available for £139 at Amazon and Currys, an additional £10 off its latest average list price. Its official RRP is still £219.99, but the expansion card has been sitting at £150 ever since the WD Black C50 card was released for the Xbox as well (also priced at £150).

As we've mentioned, this is nowhere near as good as the likes of the PS5 SSD discounts you can find at the moment, but it's definitely still a good deal if you're looking for some extra storage on your beloved Xbox console right now, especially if you've got the Series S which is rocking just 512GB of storage.

While we're here, we'll run you through the latest PS5 SSD deals as well, as it feels relevant enough for comparison's sake. IGN's favourite PS5 SSD the Corsair MP600 PRO LPX 1TB is down to £79.98 at the moment, but we're expecting this to drop even further during Prime Day. Otherwise, our next best deal is on the Crucial P5 Plus 1TB (w/o heatsink) which has dropped to £56.99 at Amazon as well. Keep an eye out for more incredible deals in the coming days as Prime Day kicks off on July 11, or follow @IGNUKDeals to be kept in the know.

More Great Deals to Consider in the UK

Amazon Prime Day is coming up soon and will surely bring a whole slew of new gaming deals to check out. But, we've already got a great selection of early deals to check out right now as well. This includes one of our favourite deals of the year: 3-months of Audible for free if you're a Prime Member. This is an awesome deal saving you £23.97 in total and grants you access to three audiobook tokens, and the entire Audible podcast library as well.

Should You Buy a Nintendo Switch on Amazon Prime Day 2023?

The Nintendo Switch has been on the market for 6 years now and has become one of the best-selling consoles of all time. Although there are rumors swirling about the next generation of Nintendo consoles, the Switch remains the best way to play most Nintendo games in 2023. Despite its age, however, there are rarely any actual discounts on the Nintendo Switch outside of sales events.

Amazon Prime Day is happening next week, and although we likely won’t see big discounts on Switch consoles, it is a surprisingly good time to save on Nintendo Switch games and accessories. Below are some details on what you can expect during Prime Day 2023.

What Nintendo Switch Deals Should You Expect on Amazon Prime Day?

While it’s possible that Amazon will be offering direct discounts on the Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED during Prime Day, history would suggest otherwise. If you’re looking to save money on a new Nintendo console, your best bet is likely going to be a bundle. Traditionally Amazon has a variety of different Switch bundles during sales events that are worth taking advantage of – the most popular one being the Mario Kart 8 bundle.

Outside of the consoles themselves, we will likely see some great Nintendo Switch games go on sale for under $30. Although we likely won’t see such discounts on newer games like Tears of the Kingdom, titles such as Breath of the Wild and Mario Party Superstars will most likely be on sale. Amazon has also offered various buy 2 get one free sales that have applied to games as well.

If you already have a Switch and are just in the market for some of the best Switch accessories, Prime Day is usually a good time to find both third-party controllers, cases, SD cars and other add-ons for a discounted price.

Do Other Retailers Have Nintendo Switch Deals on Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon isn’t the only one with a Prime Day sale planned for next week. Both Best Buy and Walmart will be having sales events during the same time period that will likely have similar discounts on Switch bundles and games. Walmart especially tends to have a fairly decent selection of popular Nintendo Switch games that get discounted during shopping holidays.

Although the discounts between retailers will likely be similar, keep an eye out for differences between bundles depending on the retailer. Amazon will often bundle consoles with various different third-party accessories and these may differ at Best Buy or Walmart. The games that are on sale sometimes differ as well between retailers.

Should You Buy a Nintendo Switch on Prime Day or Black Friday?

The short answer is that you should buy a Nintendo Switch whenever there’s any kind of sale, regardless of the time of year. Amazon will likely offer the same console bundles on Prime Day as it will on Black Friday, so there’s no real reason to wait if you’re in need of a Nintendo Switch.

That being said, there are sometimes some unique bundles and promotions during Black Friday that you won’t find any other time of the year. They usually includes additional games or accessories for free, but quantities tend to be limited. As always, do your research into the seller before you make a purchase.

Summoners War RELOADED: A Massive Update is Coming to Summoners War: Sky Arena

Summoners War RELOADED: A Massive Update is Coming to Summoners War: Sky Arena

Fans of Com2uS’ tactical fantasy RPG hit, Summoners War, know that after celebrating nine years of success, Com2uS has no intention of slowing down. From amazing anniversary rewards for players, to in-game events and even an Assassin’s Creed collaboration, Summoners War has given players plenty of reasons to return to the world they love. With their latest showcase on June 23rd for Summoners War RELOADED, they’ve announced another massive set of updates! Read on for all of the latest news.

Dungeons, Artifacts, and Monsters!

There was a lot of content announced at Summoners War RELOADED showcase. New players will have hours and hours of content to discover, while returning summoners will have more than enough to keep them engaged.

Spiritual Realm, a new Cairos Dungeon, has been added. This new dungeon has difficulty settings that are comparable to the existing Cairos Dungeons, but will drop Fight, Enhance, Accuracy, Determination, and Tolerance runes that were previously dropped only in the rift world. It will also drop the newly added Seal Runes, the second set of runes. For existing Giant Dungeons, the Abyss Floors have been added. Existing dungeons have been changed from 12 floors to 10 floors, and two new floors will be added. Abyss floors are seasonal, and do not allow for multiple monsters. Six star runes are returning to the 10th floors of dungeons, while new rune sets will only be dropped on the Abyss floors. You can dive into Necropolis in July, Spiritual Realm in August, the Steel Fortress in September, and the Punisher’s Crypt in December.

Meet the two new monsters joining the fray: the Indra and the Asura! Today, we’re highlighting the Wind Indra and Water Asura which are just two of the ten variations joining the fray! The Wind Indra is a 5-star that specializes in wind and lightning attacks that debuff enemies while the Water Asura is a 4-Star that gradually increases their attack power every time they strike an enemy. If you liked reading about them, just know that both monsters will be coming in every single attribute! That means you can expect to see things like a Light Asura or a Dark Indra as well. For more info, you can check out all skills and specs of the new monsters in-game!

Two new sets of runes have been added with various effects and ways to impact gameplay. The Intangible Rune allows players to complete a rune set by filling one empty slot, allowing players to have the full effects of a complete rune set. While it won’t replace several runes in a single set, it’s still a powerful tool if used wisely.

What's New?

Com2uS has proven to be a team that not only listens to their community, but also acts on the feedback they get. They’ve heard the feedback and are doing away with many of the inefficient and outdated systems that have run their course over the last nine years. Instead, they’ve improved and simplified these systems.

Seasoned players will notice the rearrangement of the in-game item acquiring area - this feature simplifies the process so players can focus on farming, rather than constant dungeon switching. Rune enhancement has also been simplified, letting players acquire nat6 runes through Rune Combination, rather than just from farming!

Yet another improvement is the update made to their battle systems. They’ve added an additional turn and unified the attack gauge conditions. Before, some combat situations would result in a player getting an additional turn deferred. Now, with this improvement, they’ve ensured that all skills resulting in an additional turn, will be the same across the board. They’re also updating how the “Absorption” effect in the attack gauge is handled. Currently, if the gauge was absorbed by whatever percent, it would go up that amount regardless of the remaining attack gauge. Now, even if a monster only has ten percent of their health remaining, a player using the absorption effect to steal fifty percent health, will still get that full amount. A few other changes are that “Crushing Hits,” an attribute advantage attack, have been removed. They’ve also rearranged the effect of the Despair rune set with a multi-hit skill!

Other Highlights From the Showcase

In addition to the game features mentioned, one notable highlight from last weekend’s showcase includes the announcement of the fanart event winners celebrating the 9th anniversary of Summoners War. Grand Prize winners are receiving special edition art books signed by the artists behind Summoners War!

Com2uS also held an extensive Q&A time with key members of the team addressing the most pressing questions from players. The team dedicated a significant portion of their time during the presentation to hear and address feedback from their fanbase. It seems to be one of the reasons Summoners War continues to have an active community nine years after its initial launch!

With new dungeons, new monsters, new features directly added based on player feedback, and a ton of other additions, Summoners War fans have a lot of content to explore. If you’re searching for a new tactical RPG to dive into, or a lifelong summoner looking for a new adventure, Summoners War: Sky Arena has you covered!

Psychonauts 3 Isn't Coming Anytime Soon

Fans hoping for a Psychonauts 3 reveal shouldn't get their hopes up as franchise creator and Double Fine Productions founder Tim Schafer has said it's not being worked on at the moment.

Schafer told Cressup on YouTube that Double Fine is currently in a "closed doors" stage and isn't ready to talk about what it's working on, but he personally isn't working on a sequel to 2021's Psychonauts 2.

"I’m not working on Psychonauts 3," he said plainly. "We’re kind of at the ‘Willy Wonka, closed doors’ phase. But soon we could open and cause a lot of harm to a lot of children, just like Willy Wonka."

This comes despite what many thought was an obvious Psychonauts 3 tease ahead of the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase, though Schafer insisted he didn't see it.

A Microsoft Twitter account shared a noughts and crosses board that spelled out "psycho" outside of three crosses. Many put this together to tease Psychonauts 3, but the Xbox Games Showcase came and went with no reveal.

In our 8/10 review of the second game, IGN said: "Even with a few rough edges, Psychonauts 2 is just about everything I could have hoped for from this long-awaited sequel."

Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. He'll talk about The Witcher all day.

Nexon's Medieval Fantasy Brawler Warhaven Shutting Down 6 Months After Launching in Early Access

Nexon's medieval fantasy brawler Warhaven is shutting down on April 5, 2024, just six months after it launched on Steam in Early Access...
