Gotham Knights: The First 16 Minutes of Gameplay – IGN First

Our IGN First for August is WB Montreal’s long-awaited Gotham Knights – the open world action-RPG set in a brand new Batman video game universe… in which Batman has died. To kick off a month of new footage, interviews, and news, we’re beginning, appropriately, with the first 16 minutes of gameplay.

The footage (above) shows off the first time you’ll take control of one of the Knights, running you through the basic controls and abilities for both combat and traversal. The opening of the game is set amid the rarefied environs of Gotham University, with the Knights following Batman’s last lead, and on the hunt to find Dr. Kirk Langstrom (known to comic book fans as Man-Bat). After finding that he’s seemingly been murdered before you arrive, you’ll need to investigate the crime scene and fight past members of the Freaks gang, who are trashing the campus, having been emboldened by Batman’s death.

In the final game, you’ll be able to choose which superhero you’d like to play this section with, but we’re showing off Batgirl’s version of the intro today. While the events of this section are the same for each Knight, all four characters will have different dialogue and animations during this section.

The interesting thing here is that, despite this being the opening of an RPG, none of the Knights are meant to be weak – instead, all four are already proficient at Batman’s style of crime fighting, and your progression through the game is instead helping each one find their own strengths beyond that (more on that progression later this month).

“They're already awesome at the start of the game,” explains creative director Patrick Redding. “It's not a function of them being ineffective as crime fighters, quite the opposite. They are all effectively graduates of the Batman School of Crime Fighting. So when they start, they are at their most similar, in the sense that they have a lot of these basic tools of combat and stealth, and moving around in the world and using their grapple. And then it's really over the course of the game that they fully diverge into their own flavor of what a Dark Knight of Gotham City should be.”

What comes before this first playable section is much more of a mystery. WB Montreal is being extremely coy about the prologue to Gotham Knights, refusing to say how and where Batman dies (and who’s responsible). All we know is that his four proteges – Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing and Red Hood – meet by his grave and decide to work together to solve the mystery that seemingly led to Batman’s demise.

We’ll find out more when the game is released for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5 on October 25. Before that, however, we’ll have the whole of August to show you new gameplay, in-depth information, and more.

Bayonetta 3 Is Available for Preorder

Fans have been waiting a long time, but Bayonetta 3 finally has a release window: it's coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch on October 28. Developed by PlatinumGames, Bayonetta 3 is the next installment in a series that's known for epic fights and acrobatic action (see it at Amazon, or Amazon UK).

Bayonetta 3 is now available to preorder at a number of retailers. Below, you'll find all the info you need to secure a copy of it for yourself once the release date rolls around.

Bayonetta 3 Trinity Masquerade Edition

The Trinity Masquerade edition comes with the game itself, plus the following items:

  • Art book
  • Alternate art covers

Preorder Bayonetta 3 (Standard Edition)

If all you want is the game, that's totally doable. Grab it from one of the esteemed retailers above.

Bayonetta 1 Is Getting a Physical Version on Switch

Also announced alongside the Bayonetta 3 release date is that the original Bayonetta is getting a physical version for Switch on September 30 for $29.99. Preorders for that are not yet available. Currently, the original Bayonetta is only available for Switch in digital format.

What Is Bayonetta 3?

Bayonetta 3 is the next entry in a series of action games starring the bespectacled leather-clad hero of the title. The first game came out in 2009, with a followup in 2014. Platinum announced the third game in 2017 with a brief teaser trailer. After that, we heard virtually nothing about the game until the September 2021 Nintendo Direct, where we got the trailer below.

The setting, at least for the portion of the game in the trailer, is a city under attack by giant kaiju-like creatures. Soldiers are trying to ward off the beasts, but are making little progress. Enter Bayonetta, who comes in hacking and slashing all over the monsters. She can also use various special abilities, including a new one called Demon Slave (seen at the 2:30 mark) that lets you summon a kaiju of your own to control.

For more info about the series, you can check out our Bayonetta review and Bayonetta 2 review. And while finding new physical copies of Bayonetta 2 for Switch is difficult these days, you can pick up both previous games on the Nintendo eShop. Play through them, and you'll be all set for Bayonetta 3, whenever it arrives.

Pokémon Presents: Broadcast to Reveal Scarlet and Violet Information This Week

Pokémon Presents will return this week, and the Nintendo Direct-like broadcast will include "updates on Pokémon apps and video games, including Pokémon Scarlet and Violet."

The show will air on Wednesday, August 3 at 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK / 11pm AEST. It will be shown on the Pokémon YouTube channel.

The last Pokémon Presents showcase came in February, and saw the announcement of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, as well as news for Pokémon Legends Arceus, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Pokémon Go, and more.

Sony Is Already Retiring Accolades, a PS5 Launch Feature

Sony will be retiring PS5's Accolades feature later this year, as players have not used the awards-based system as much as the company anticipated when it was unveiled at launch.

As reported by TheSixthAxis, Sony announced in a statement that they would be pulling the plug on the Accolades feature in the coming months because uptake has been low amongst PS5 users.

"In fall of 2022, the Accolades feature on PlayStation 5 will no longer be supported," the statement read. "The feature hasn't seen the level of usage we anticipated, so we are refocusing our efforts. We encourage the community to continue to send positive messages to one another."

Accolades were initially introduced to foster a more positive gaming experience and bring the community together by encouraging players to send one of three Accolades (Helpful, Welcoming, or Good Sport) to a fellow gamer based on their performance in an online multiplayer match.

Players could then see how many Accolades they had racked up by looking at their PSN profiles. Unfortunately, it looks as those players weren't all that interested in the option.

Sony's been adding new features elswhere, with the PlayStation Stars scheme announced last month. PlayStation Stars is a new loyalty programme that will allow players to earn points that can be redeemed on the PlayStation store or for other rewards.

The programme will mark another upgrade to Sony's digital offerings as it recently introduced new PlayStation Plus tiers. While the basic tier is more or less the same as the previous PlayStation Plus, the middle and most expensive tiers offer hundreds of extra games in a service similar to Xbox Game Pass.

Call of Duty Warzone: Plagiarism Accusations Surface Around New Dog Operator Design

A popular new furry Operator in Call of Duty Warzone has become the subject of plagiarism claims.

The new playable character, due to launch alongside the upcoming Terminator bundle, allows you to buy and play as a “Loyal Samoyed” – a soldier with the head of a very, very good boy. You can see the design below in a promotional image from developer Raven Software.

However, concept artist Sail Lin claims that the design has been plagiarised from a piece they created over two years ago:

“I am the original artist that the upcoming CoD Vanguard Samoyed skin was plagiarized from,” they said on Twitter (below). “Even though I am also a CoD player, I am very disappointed to see my work plagiarized by a big company like Activision in this way.”

“I have reached out to Activision for an explanation and/or compensation, and hopefully the situation will be settled soon,” they explained. “As an individual artist, I can only do so much, and I have to speak out about this to stop things like this happening again in the future.”

The artist uploaded their original design (called 'Samoye Medical') to online portfolio website ArtStation in December 2019, so there’s little arguing that their work preceded the upcoming CoD skin.

Even more interestingly, following these accusations, Raven Software has since removed mention of the “Loyal Samoyed” skin from its website. As noted by Polygon, a blog post announcing the skin has since been updated to remove images and mentions of the design. Additionally, tweets promoting the skin have also been removed.

We've contacted Activision Blizzard for comment.

Sail Lin is a concept artist from Shenzen, China, whose portfolio includes a whole catalog of gun designs alongside a range of cute puppers on combat gear.

Whether or not Lin will be contacted by Activision or Raven Software remains to be seen. But it looks as though this take on man’s best friend won’t be heading to the Warzone – at least, not for the time being.

Activision Blizzard has previously been sued for an Operator's likeness, after photographer Clayton Haugen alleged that the game's Mara character was based on images he'd taken of a cosplayer. That case was later settled.
